Origin of the name
Kinhikàna is the word for “grindstones” in Lenape language. The inspiration came from a stone, found in the basement during the renovation, that looked like a giant silex.
First, I searched for any Lenape Chief with the name “stone” in it or any variations, “little/flat/gray stone/rock” but nothing came out. But, pretty quickly, I stomped upon this great resource: Lenape Talking Dictionary. As well as a full page with different translations. There is a direct word for “little stone”, but its short spelling and scandinavian-ish pronunciation was not appealing enough. Despite that, there was a word with a nice composition and length: “Kinhikàn”. The singular form of “grindstone”, what a silex somewhat is. The plural version was even better, with the addition of the letter “a” to go with cinema. And there was born Kinhikàna Cinema.
