The Kinhikàna Cinema collection regroups almost 600 films in different format, from 8mm, Super 8 to 16mm. It even includes some 35mm trailers and IMAX 15/70 features, but staying away from those gauges is preferable for now. For now.
The accent is put on 16mm, with almost 300 features. This format offers a large catalogue of movies, mostly from the 20’s to late 90’s. Its size, about 6 times less than 35mm, makes it very convient to store. Most of the films come in two or three reels, reducing the numbers of breaks and limiting the need of a change over system. While not as detailed as 35mm, 16mm still offers a “definition” equivalent to HD video, in 1:33 and Scope 2:35. The optical mono is another story, don’t expect any booming clear sound but it’s part of the charm. 16 has been used a lot for Television (and Airlines), it’s not rare to find “cut/censored” prints. It seems annoying first but it has its interesting part for some titles. I let you imagine the challenge with films like Death Wish or Zardoz.
